Antony's 19th Legion
Lot 4035
Mark Antony, 44-30 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.78 g, 6 h), military mint moving with Mark Antony (Patrae?), 32-31. ANT•AVG - III VIR•R•P•C Galley right, with scepter tied with fillet on prow. Rev. LEG XIX Aquila between two signa. Babelon (Antonia) 132. Crawford 544/35. CRI 378. RBW 1847. Sydenham 1242. The reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The nineteenth was another of the many legions raised by Antony prior to his final struggle against Octavian at Actium. It is not to be confused with Legio XIX fighting for Octavian, which was later annihilated by Arminius in the famous Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD.
